It took nine months for construction workers to to build the Martyrs' Memorial. It is made of concrete and was built on the site of an ancient military fort.
The Martyrs' Memorial is fashioned in the shape of three standing palm leaves which shelter the "Eternal Flame" beneath. At the edge of each palm leaf stands a statue of a soldier, each representing a stage of Algeria's struggle.
The Martyrs' Memorial was a real challenge to build because of its geometry, especially the curvature of the fins. It also sits on the edge of a steep cliff in an area that sometimes has earthquakes.
