The Castle of São Jorge is a Moorish castle occupying a commanding hilltop overlooking the historic center of the city of Lisbon and Tagus River. The strongly fortified citadel dates from the medieval period.

    Although the first fortifications on the hilltop where The Castle of Saint George now stands date to the 2nd century BC, archaeological excavations have identified a human presence as far back as the 6th century BC.

    The Castle of Saint George contains the remnants of a royal palace, but all that is left are some walls and a few rebuilt rooms like the Casa Ogival. It now hosts the Olissipónia, a multimedia show about the history of Lisbon.

    The hilltop that the Castle of Saint George and its fortifications stand upon have served as a defensible outpost since Roman times. It was so well protected that it became a royal residence in 1255.
