The Kyoto Imperial Palace is the former ruling palace of the Emperor of Japan. Today the grounds are open to the public, and the Imperial Household Agency hosts public tours of the buildings several times a day.

    Before the Japanese capital was moved to Tokyo in 1869, the Kyoto Imperial Palace was the home of the Emperor. The preservation of the palace was ordered in 1877, and has since remained an example of Japanese imperial architecture.
