Copán is an archaeological site of the Maya civilization, which was occupied for more than two thousand years. It was a powerful city which ruled a vast kingdom within the southern Maya empire from the 5th to 9th centuries CE.

Copán was a site of agriculture before the first known stone architecture was built in the region about the 9th century B.C. Most of the structures in the area were built after 426 A.D. during its peak as a ruling city.
Copán is a Mayan ruin with major ceremonial structures and royal monuments with figures and language. The city contains a plaza, an Acropolis, a ballcourt, temples, and other structures built by the inhabitants.
