The Imam Reza Shrine is a complex which contains various mausoleums of religious figures, the Goharshad Mosque, a museum, a library, four seminaries, a cemetery, the Razavi University of Islamic Sciences, vast prayer halls, and other buildings.

  • Man-Made

    In the 9th century a dome was built on the grave of Imam Reza. The sanctuary has been renovated many times over hundreds of years and new buildings continuously added to the site.
  • Places of Worship, Religious Buildings

    In 818 Imam Reza was buried here. Shias and sunnis started visiting there for pilgrimage of his grave. By the end of the 9th century a dome was built on the grave and many buildings and Bazaars sprang up around it.
  • Superlatives

    The Imam Reza Shrine is the largest mosque in the world by dimension and the second largest in capacity. The shrine itself covers an area of 267,079 m2. The outer courtyards bring the total to 598,657 m2 (6,443,890 sq ft).
  • Tombs and Graves

    Many pilgrims come to visit the tomb of Imam Reza. The shrine also includes the graves of many other Muslim holy figures, scholars, and even Manouchehr Eghbal, the Iranian Prime Minister from 1957 to 1960.
